Sandy Shore Farms is seeking qualified applicants to fulfill the position of Corporate Controller.

As a member of the senior management team, the Controller is responsible for managing the overall financial health of the organization consistent with business strategy. Duties include developing, monitoring and managing annual budgets and forecasts, securing appropriate financing to fund operations and special projects, implementing policies, procedures and controls to manage risk and overseeing the completion of the company's annual financial statements. This role is also responsible for generating timely and accurate financial reports and analysis to help guide business decisions.

In addition to its strategic responsibilities, the Controller manages the purchasing, accounts receivable / payable, payroll and assigned administrative functions within the company.


Budgeting, Forecasting, Analyzing and Reporting

- Develop annual budgets consistent with business strategy, drawing input from Sales and Operations; present budget to the Board for approval

- Develop and monitor the 3-5-year financial plan to support long-term business strategy

- Monitor financial performance against budget monthly / as required; prepare quarterly financial forecasts; investigate variances; identify risks and take measures to mitigate them

- Develop and monitor monthly cash flow and sales forecasts in conjunction with Sales and Operations

- Strengthen the company's purchasing practices

- Analyze business results and identify opportunities to increase profitability, including price changes, cost controls and operational efficiencies

Year-End Financials and Government Reporting / Funding

- Oversee and assist external accountants in completing the year-end financial statements accurately and on time; deliver all financial information to the accounting firm within one month after year end

- Ensure all tax returns and other regulatory filings are completed and filed and amounts owing are paid within established deadlines

- Research and pursue available government funding programs to support operations

- Manage the SR&ED application process with CCRA, preparing supporting financial data and serving as a point of contact for financial matters

Accounting and Controls

- Establish, implement and monitor internal controls to ensure accounting practices comply with external accounting standards (IFRS) and company policies; ensure proper segregation of duties to manage risk

- Prepare / oversee all accounting transactions including journal entries, cheque processing, bank reconciliations, payroll, accounts payable & receivable, and statutory remittances

- Prepare and submit required reporting and remittances for statutory withholdings including HST, WSIB, payroll taxes, EHT etc. within established deadlines

- Oversee the processing of purchase orders and preparation of customer invoices

- Oversee payroll processing and benefits administration, ensure proper documentation is in place and employees are paid accurately, on time, and compliant with statutory requirements

Banking and Legal

- Develop and maintain strong relationships with bankers; manage the relationships proactively to support day to day banking needs as well as financing for capital purchases

- Maintain all required legal documentation including the minute book, banking resolutions, trademarks, lease agreements, purchase contracts and obtain relevant legal etc.

- University degree in Business or Accounting; CPA designation is required

- Min 5 years' experience in industry / agri-business accounting positions, in increasingly senior positions

- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and sound financial management

- Strong knowledge of, and experience with, accounting software

- Proven track record of establishing and managing banking relationships
